Packaging Design Research

I have gathered research on existing successful candle packaging which I find interesting and relevant towards this brief and the way I am approaching it. This includes design for the outer box packaging, candle vessel, labels and additional detailing that comes within the candle packaging as all of these need to be designed for the YCN Oliver Bonas submission. The candle packaging designs and companies that I researched into are Chick Lit Candles, Elements Candles, Daily Affections Candles and existing Oliver Bonas candles.

Chick lit candles match the scent of the candle to the personality of the candles. For example The Overthinker  has a scent of amberwood nectar which is deep and complex. I really enjoy the fresh colours of the packaging and the line drawing patterns on the tins, the colour palette is refreshing and summery which is very similar to the Oliver Bonas colour palette provided for this brief.

The card that comes with each candle is also a really nice touch, the card gives a brief description about the candle and it's personality, since the candles designs that I create for this brief are a collection of 4, this would be a really nice touch to include within each of the candle 4 packaging in order to make each one more personal and unique.

Below shows images of Elements Candles, I found the use of pattern and texture of the candle boxes interesting and really intriguing. The patterns were created using a handmade marbling effect which aims give the sensation of a 'gentle, flowing movement like the invisible smoke filling the air with a delicate perfume'.

Elements candles are relevant towards my research as the designs that I create will also have a heavy focus on texture and pattern which will be inspired by my concept of insects and nature. This has inspired me to research further into texture and mark making techniques.

The Daily Affections candles was one of my favourite candle designs that I've come across so far, the use of block colour pattern alongside line drawings and line patterns creates a successful contrast and the overall contemporary aesthetic also works really well 'Daily Affections is a series of candles featuring odd but attractive scents we encounter in our daily lives'

The colour palettes used for each candle vessel, tin and box work successfully as they follow a light, fresh aesthetic whilst also being bold and eye-catching which increases sales. The use of the specific Sans Serif typeface also achieves a contemporary and classy aesthetic.

I also gathered some further research on current Oliver Bonas candles through the Oliver Bonas website https://www.oliverbonas.com/.

The moodboards provide images of previous Oliver Bonas candles but I felt that it was important to look at them in more detail on the website as it provides information about the scents, the concepts, the candle collection and more photographs of the designs. Below show 3 candles from different Oliver Bonas collections which I enjoyed the designs of.

Voyage collection- Scent: Pomegranate and Patchouli
