I also had a look through the D&AD briefs as I did the Durex campaign last year which I quite enjoyed, however I fancied doing YCN this year for a change. When looking through the D&AD briefs I was quite intrigued by The Case for Her x Teen Vogue brief: 'Mind the pleasure gap'.
YCN Fedrigoni x Oliver Bonas brief:
Oliver Bonas is an independent British lifestyle store that focuses on fashion and homeware which has grown to over 80 stores across the UK. Oliver Bonas was once a small business in 1993 where the first store opened in London, founded by Olly (Oliver Bonas).
Fedrigoni create fine-quality special papers; producing striking surfaces, tactile textures and vivid colours, the papers that they create can be pressed, bent, cut and folded into any form.
'For this brief, Fedrigoni is teaming up with retailer Oliver Bonas to present a colourful and collaborative creative challenge. We want you to create the packaging for a new range of candles for our SS20 collection. The Oliver Bonas SS20 Tierra moodboards, which can be found in the project pack, are to be used to form the narrative of your designs. Your packaging concept will need to support 4 designs that work together as a collective.'
Creative Requirements
Showcasing the potential of the Fedrigoni range, your submission will need to include the following:
- Outer packaging for the four candles.
- The label that will go on the vessel (the container for the actual candle).
- Any other tactile paper or card elements that you feel will support the product story.
- A name for the range.
The Fedrigoni x Oliver Bonas brief focuses on packaging which is very up my street, my design practice focuses more on design for print than screen as I enjoy it a lot more. I love the aesthetic of the Oliver Bonas branding and product designs as they are very feminine, summery and pattern based. There is an Oliver Bonas store in town as well which would be great for first hand research.

D&AD brief set by The Case For Her & Teen Vogue:
“Sex education... often leaves out important information about our bodies and sexual and vaginal health. We’re expected to figure it out on our own, often through watching bad porn, googling, and experiences with partners that we wish we could erase from our memories.” - Devra Ferst, Teen Vogue
'The Case For Her want you to develop a branded content piece or series that will feature on one or more of Teen Vogue’s media channels, including their website, social and YouTube channels.'
My response to this brief should explore the female pleasure and sexual wellness space and seek to educate and challenge Teen Vogue’s audience about the issues surrounding it. My aim throughout this brief would be to normalise girls’, women’s, and non-binary people’s journey to nurture, develop and explore their sexuality.
I'm really intrigued by this brief as it tackles such an important topic for women which I feel strongly about, I think its extremely important for women and young girls to be more aware about their sexual wellness, pleasure and sexualities. Growing up as a female I agree that we are often expected to figure out all of these things on our own, either through google and awkward sexual experiences. The target audience for this brief is mainly 18-24 year olds which is perfect as I fit this age category so I can relate to the topic and possibly gather first hand research from my female friends.
Over the next week I will decide whether I want to do the YCN brief or the D&AD brief, I'll also discuss the two options with peers and tutors next week.
