Oliver Bonas Store Research

Today I visited the Oliver Bonas store in town in order to gather some first hand research on their candles and other gift/decoration products that they sell. I felt that this research was important as it allowed me to see what their brand image currently consists of and the overall Oliver Bonas aesthetic, it's important that my candle designs also follow the Oliver Bonas brand aesthetic as well as what I think is appropriate to the brief.

I felt that some of the candle collections followed a very minimal aesthetic such as the mini winter trio, whereas some followed a more vibrant, playful aesthetic (the ones next to the mini winter trio). Combing these two aesthetics could be something to experiment with within my designs, I also think using more vibrant colours and imagery would be successful within my designs as this would represent the season that they are for; Spring/Summer 2020.

Notes from research:

  • The candle collections often use similar colours on a few of the candles within the collection which makes them look like they are part of the same range if they were sold separately
  • Bright, positive colour palettes
  • Pattern and image combination
  • Handrawn/painted aesthetic
  • Sans Serif type faces are popular on most of their products
  • Fresh and warm scents
