D&AD vs YCN Brief

Since I am stuck on whether to do the YCN Fedrigoni x Oliver Bonas brief or the D&AD The Case For Her & Teen Vogue brief, I decided to make a pros and cons list for both of them which has helped me decide what one I want to go for.

YCN brief pros and cons:

Pros:

  • The brief is a lot more specific and detailed as to what the outcomes need to be and what they should communicate
  • Mood boards and colour palettes provided within brief project pack for aesthetic and design to use as inspiration/focus
  • Oliver Bonas shop in town for collecting first hand research
  • I enjoy the Oliver Bonas current aesthetic and branding that they use on their products, very me and feminine, pattern based
  • I enjoy packaging design, a good number of projects I have done focus on it- design for print over design for screen always
Cons:
  • Not as much freedom as the D&AD brief- however, this is also a good thing as they provide you with more information on what to create and aesthetic to follow
  • Can't look at/feel the Fedrigoni papers before ordering them and can only request a sample pack

D&AD brief pros and cons:

Pros:
  • The topic is something in actually passionate about. It's a real life issue that matters to me and young women across the globe
  • More creative freedom than YCN brief
  • First hand research- sexual health clinics and peers/my female friends
  • I am the target audience (18-24 year olds) so I can relate to it

Cons:
  • It's mainly design for screen which isn't suited to me as I prefer design for print
  • Should involve videos/animation which isn't my strongest point so I'd struggle a lot and hit creative blocks- would need assistance
  • The brief PDF was quite confusing as to what they actually want created/communicated throughout the outcome- just mentions it's about female sexual pleasure and wellness
  • Says the branded outcomes should appear on Teen Vogue youtube channel- maybe this brief is more suited to someone that studies animation/film...or it could be a collaboration

I have decided to go with the YCN brief as they provide a lot more specific information on what needs to be designed and created, whereas the D&AD brief is a little bit too open whilst also being a bit confusing on what actually needs to be created as it mainly just states that it needs to be 'branded content' for Teen Vogues media channels, which leans more towards design for screen, animation and videos whereas I prefer design for print, branding and more general physical outcome creative freedom with what I create.

However, I do really like the idea of doing a project on female sexual pleasure and wellness similar to the D&AD brief as I think it's extremely important for young women to be educated on topics regarding this and I can relate to it on a personal level so I think I will do a personal project on this.
