Practical Discussion

Today I had my practical discussion in a group of 4 with Dom. This discussion was useful as I was able to get feedback off peers that don't already know what my COP essay and practical is about. I showed them my ideas, initial practical developments and explained my COP essay and main arguments that I will discuss.

Notes/feedback from discussion:

  • The current MDH Spices branding looks like it's been white washed by England
  • Maybe I could come up with the booklet for systems/steps to designing culturally sensitive first, then I could design that first and then apply it to what I create OR set myself the design rules then start following them
  • After or whilst I'm doing the re-brand, as people whether they think it's more appropriate and culturally sensitive now, has it been successful?
  • I also mention I was stuck on what type of typography/typeface to use for the designs as it needs to communicate Indian culture but it can't be stereotypical and use a design that obviously looks Indian...feedback mentioned that I should stick to modern text as it conveys the fact that cultural appropriation wasn't even this much of a thing 50 years ago, communicates that it's so now and new.
  • Main aim of the typography is to be legible and appealing. Use a neutral typeface that doesn't communicate one specific culture, something global and neutral is most appropriate- Sans serif
  • I also asked for feedback on the logo developments that I had been working on yesterday. Feedback mentioned that the type could make the shapes of the logo that I have experimented with already? curve it around or shape it within the shapes maybe, feedback also mentioned that the simple logos work better, don't overcomplicate

I feel that a lot of my questions and areas that I was a little stuck on have been answered and how I can properly move on with the practical work and start applying this feedback to my designs. I particularly found the comments about the booklet really interesting and useful and will be using them when moving forward.
