COP Tutorial

Today I had a tutorial with Dom, in the tutorial we went over a draft of the full essay which I sent over a couple of days ago. The feedback was all very useful and will help me improve my essay further within the next week or so before it has to be sent off to print. The feedback mainly included things to add to the essay in terms of more analysing in certain areas, examples and theories, the overall feedback was good.

Dom mentioned that the essay was coming along well and has improved a lot since the first couple of times that we went through it, which I agree with- the essay now has a more clear structure and flow and is a lot more relevant to graphic design now than art and design in general.

I also mentioned that I was quite stuck on the practical as I felt that the designs looked quite basic, both the packaging and booklet. I mentioned that the booklet needs to be easy to understand and not too over complicated as it's a 'how to' however, I don't want it to look boring.

Things to experiment with and consider when moving forward with practical:

  • Maybe the front could could be imagery and the title in big, since the boxes are so small. the text could be on the back or sides even
  • Be more playful with the booklet, coloured pages, different size squares on the imagery pages, can be playful and whilst using a grid at the same time, doesn't have to be so condensed
  • The front design doesn't have to be so condensed, play around with composition and scale of the imagery, the imagery could be coming out
  • Coloured backgrounds for the packaging, the white on black looks a little starch?
  • If the pages are coloured in the booklet, the images could be all one colour- this links to the packaging designs as they stick with purely one colour OR the booklet pages could use the same colour palette (red, blue and purple)
  • The packaging could be white text on black perhaps? they may make the images pop a little more
  • Research into publications similar to this and graphic design how to books- look at the layouts they use
