Evaluation

This was one of the most enjoyable competition briefs I have worked on this year, I feel that the physical boxes and candle labels look to a high standard and are something that would be expected to be seen in an Oliver Bonas store as they match the brand image successfully. Creating design based around nature and my everyday surroundings was also something that I enjoyed, as it made me pay more attention to smaller details that I used in the designs such as colour palettes and detailing in the illustrations. This was important as I wanted my designs to portray the season that the candle designs were for (Spring and Summer).

I enjoyed the process of creating digital illustrations based on insects and then combining them with the colours and design inspiration provided by Oliver Bonas. It was also great that Oliver Bonas gave us freedom on the dimensions of the label and boxes as it meant that I was able to experiment in ways that I wanted.

However, this brief was quite awkward as the YCN briefed stated that the packaging must use the Fedrigoni paper stock, however most of the paper Fedrigoni papers were sent are quite bright and dark. This was confusing as the brief states that we must also use the colour palette that Oliver Bonas provided which I have did, but the Fedregoni paper stock didn’t match these colours. Also, Fedrigoni only sent one A4 sheet of each paper stock, meaning that I wouldn't have been able to use them to print the actually packaging anyway as A4 was way too small.

In conclusion, peer feedback also suggested that the designs followed a consistent and eye-catching layout whilst being fresh and summery through the use of colour and pattern which is appropriate for the season that the candles are for. The photographs of the final outcomes also look professional and clean which was important for my submission to YCN.
