Concept Development and Visual Research

Since I want to create 3 different vinyl designs for the my Secret 7 submission, I need to have 3 different concepts or ways of approaching the design using different techniques. Me and my friends had a discussion of how I could do this in which we sat and watched the music video for Come Over together and I also explained the meaning behind the song before showing them.

I have come up with the idea to display the 3 different scenarios/scenes that the song is about through each design, the 3 designs will follow the same aesthetic and use the same techniques so that they work as a set and tell a story almost.

The song is about 3 different stages of being with someone that you have feelings for and the process of them coming over and then spending the next day in bed with them

The 3 stages:

-Wanting them to come over and/or convincing them. Usually through late night texting and/or phone calls, usually happens after having a drink or being out all day and wanting their company.

-The night that they’re there/when they arrive- being in bed with them and falling asleep. The song discusses drinking champagne in bed with them, cuddling, just being in their company and feeling their presence

-The next day spending the day in bed, being lazy, listening to music, chilling

More notes:
  • Magical
  • Butterflies in the room
  • Waviness/psychedelic smoke- the song has a very chill, smooth vibe so this should be communicated within the designs
  • Stars and deep colours
  • Bed
  • Drinking and texting

The designs that I create will be mainly image based with short lyrics/words if I feel that they are relevant towards the imagery. The Secret 7 guidelines state to not include the musician’s name, the track title or your name in your design.

The imagery will be illustrative combined with patterns that represent waves, soft movements and romance. Artists that I found relevant towards this are Laura Callaghan and Fiona Rae, I have loved both these artists for a long time and feel that a combination of both their aesthetics would communicate my approach well.

Laura Callaghans work is relevant as I could display the objects and settings of each of the 3 stages within the song through illustration and detailing similar to how Laura Callaghan pictures a scene throughout her illustrations.

Fiona Rae's design aesthetic is relevant through the shapes, waves and brush marks that can be seen throughout her pieces. The use of soft and deep colours would also work well to portray the late night mood of the track. Soft mark making and waves would represent the romance and setting of the song which could be used as background imagery with the illustrations.
