Overall, this was a fun little passion project that I enjoyed doing as it was based on one of my favourite albums of all time. I decided to do this brief as I really enjoyed the Secret 7 brief which helped me discover that I enjoy designing for music.
I enjoyed researching further into the artist and concept of the the tracks. Using the technique of mark making whilst listening to the tracks gave the overall design a more abstract and conceptual aesthetic, which worked well against the clean shot photographs that I used. I also feel that the vibe of the album and soft tone of SZA’s voice was well communicated through the feminine, fantasy like aesthetic.
I could’ve pushed this project further if I also designed the full sleeve that you can remove from the CD cover which typically contains more information about the album, collaborations and sometimes lyric sheets. However, this was only a short one week brief as most of my briefs throughout the year have been larger (a couple of weeks to a month) and I often work on two briefs at the same time.
It would’ve also been great if I could have produced the vinyl sleeve and CD cover and label physically and photographed it myself, however due to COVID-19 I didn’t have access to facilities. If I was to produce the designs physically, the vinyl and CD covers would use thick matte paper with satin lamination to give them a classic vinyl and CD tear proof texture. The gradient lines on the cover and CD label would also use a foiled metallic effect in silver.
